But first, your local headlines:
Monroe County Zoning Board Approves Veterinary Expansion, Deer Processing Facility and Home-Based Business Request
The Monroe County Board of Zoning Appeals met August 6th, and approved variance requests for the expansion of Shake Veterinary Service on North Smith Pike. Variances were approved for impervious surface limits, landscaping and parking.
Board Member Margaret Clements said maintaining the functionality of the facility is more important than landscaping requirements, especially given its significance in the community.
A variance request regarding the sidewalk requirement for the property was not decided and will be discussed at the board’s November 5th meeting. Board members said they need more information and recommended that Casey Shake, the veterinary hospital owner, work with an engineer to determine if the sidewalk could be constructed for a reasonable price.
The board also approved a conditional use request for S&W Deer Processing.
The board received an anonymous complaint in October concerning S&W because it is a commercial operation on a residential lot. The home-based business has to fit certain regulations that the owners said they were unfamiliar with because they recently moved to Monroe County from Monrovia County.
According to the Department of Natural Resources website, S&W is the only registered deer processing facility in the county. Board Member Pamela Davidson emphasized that its uniqueness makes the business an asset to the community.
Founder William Graves also noted the importance of the business for out-of-state hunters who cannot transport deer carcasses across state lines and for the police department when cars hit deer.
The board also approved a conditional use request for the Center for Thriving Relationships. The business owner, Bret Eartheart, had an event at his home independent of the business, which prompted an anonymous complaint about operating a commercial business in a residential area.
The Center for Thriving Relationships has six offices around Bloomington and operates mostly virtually. However, the Earthearts occasionally hold client meetings at their home. The board was most concerned about the event, but after Eartheart explained it was unrelated to the business, the board was satisfied.
The board approved the conditional use request for the home-based business operations. The next Monroe County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting will be August 6th.
