Bloomington Residents Urge City Council to Cut Ties with Flock Safety

The Bloomington City Council met on February 18th. During public comment, local residents urged the council to consider cutting the city’s contract with Flock Safety – a surveillance company that has been utilized by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. One resident, Sam, says he wants the council to ban Flock altogether.

Another resident, Seaforth Breeze, says they live down the road from where a Flock camera is installed. Breeze says they believe Flock is not accountable to the public.

Community member Mobie Jean Glaser, a trauma therapist, also urged the council to cancel its contract with Flock.

Councilmember Isak Asare introduced a draft resolution that addressed automated license plate readers. According to a letter he sent to the council, the resolution pauses further expansion of Flock systems and other automated license plate readers. Asare calls it, “a first step” toward curbing the city’s affiliation with Flock.

The next meeting of the Bloomington City Council will take place on March 4th.

Feature Report:

Five million people are expected to tune in for the season 50 premiere of Survivor this Wednesday. At least a dozen of them will be members of the Live Reality Games at IU club in Bloomington, hosting a watch party Wednesday at 7:45pm in Ballantine Hall room 143. The Live Reality Games club does local versions of popular TV shows featuring students and townies. Correspondent Brian Gring has that story in a feature report produced in partnership with The Media School at Indiana University.

The Indiana University Black Student Union is helping IU students of color better themselves and their community. The mission of BSU is to improve the quality of life for Black students in Bloomington, but members also learn to advocate for themselves. Chapter President Maurquis Willingham says this has helped him build confidence. He’s also proud that BSU has started going out into the community to do community service projects on weekends. Learn more about Marquis and his work with the Black Student Union on a new episode of Activate!, coming your way right now on the WFHB Local News.
