WFHB Local News – January 14th, 2024

Listen Later

This is the WFHB Local News for Tuesday, January 14th, 2024.

Later in the program, WFHB News speaks with local residents and a city official about snow removal efforts in town following the snowstorm that hit Bloomington and surrounding areas in the past week.

More in the top half of tonight’s newscast.

That’s Cathy, a local woman who is unhoused and trying to survive dangerously cold winter nights. When the sun rises tomorrow the temperature in Bloomington may be as low as three degrees. Hear her story later in the show in a feature report.

But first, your local headlines:

The WFHB Local News was off for three weeks over the holidays while we looked back at last year for a year in review series.

During that time, Bloomington and surrounding areas were hit with a snowstorm which forced schools to close, businesses to cease operations and roads being shut down.

The effects of the snowstorm are still lingering while roads and sidewalks remain icy. Residents expressed frustration during last week’s city council meeting at the delay in snow removal and the sidewalks and street corridors not being cleared.

The city’s uReport system shows residents airing their concerns and frustrations on snow removal issues. As of this reporting, there were at least 30 complaints logged in the city’s uReport system today alone.

WFHB News Correspondents Laurie Frederickson, Tom Mucherheide and Kade Young traveled to downtown Bloomington to speak with local residents about their feelings towards the city’s snow removal efforts this winter. We now turn to those interviews on the streets of Bloomington from earlier this afternoon.

Up next, WFHB News contacted the street division of the city’s public works department who manages snow removal operations. We were unable to reach them for an interview before today’s newscast. However, we were able to reach Annabelle Vosmeier, the TPT Human Rights Administrative Assistant for the City of Bloomington. Vosmeier helps run the Snow Buddies program – a brand-new initiative that connects volunteers to help with snow removal for residents with disabilities and elderly residents. For that interview, we turn to WFHB News Correspondents Kade Young, Tom Mucherheide and Laurie Frederickson.

Feature Report:

When the sun rises tomorrow the temperature in Bloomington may be as low as three degrees. This is especially dangerous for the unhoused. WFHB Correspondent Morgan Reynolds spoke with people braving winter weather and social workers trying to bring them in from the cold, in a report produced in partnership with The Media School at Indiana University.

Imagine you have a serious medical condition requiring a colostomy bag, but you are unhoused and using plastic grocery bags instead. Now imagine the temperature drops while you’re sleeping and this bag of your own waste freezes to your body. That’s a true story from the streets of Bloomington, as told in today’s feature report on the plight of the unhoused in the bitter cold of winter.

Up next, we have Lil Bub’s Lil Show – a co-production between WFHB and Lil Bub’s Big Fund. We turn now to that segment on the WFHB Local News.
