This is the WFHB Local News for Thursday, January 1st, 2026.
In today’s newscast, we continue to look back at our reporting this year on immigration. You will hear from a man who was detained for 9.5 months by ICE in addition to interviews with Exodus Refugee Immigration. That’s coming up next in today’s edition of the local news: year in review.
Featured Segments:
On August 25th, WFHB Prison Affairs Correspondent Zoe Moczek filed a report about the Miami Correctional Facility in Indiana to house over 1,000 ICE detainees. We look back at that headline, coming up next on the local news.
The Miami Correctional Facility in Indiana is currently housing ICE detainees. This decision follows a recent partnership between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Indiana Department of Correction and is part of an effort by the federal government to increase ICE detention capacity nationwide. In today’s feature report, WFHB Correspondent Zoe Moczek speaks with Miguel Avila, a representative of Indiana Assistance to Immigrants in Detention, who discusses the impact of immigration detention and policies on immigrants and their families. Avila criticized the initiative to house 1,000 detainees at the Indiana prison in addition to sharing his own personal experience of being detained for nine and a half months, highlighting the psychological trauma and legal challenges faced by immigrants. The views and opinions expressed in this interview are those of Miguel and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Indiana AID.
At a recent town hall in Terre Haute, Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith told attendees that undocumented immigrants “don’t have a right to see a judge,” a statement that contradicts decades of U.S. legal precedent. The comments come as Camp Atterbury, once a resettlement site for Afghan refugees, is converted into a detention center for immigrants. In today’s feature report, WFHB News speaks with Rachel Van Tyle, Director of Legal Services for Exodus Refugee Immigration, about what the Constitution actually says regarding due process for undocumented immigrants and how Beckwith’s remarks fit into broader shifts in U.S. immigration policy.
