But first, your local headlines:
Vice President Kamala Harris to Speak in Indianapolis on Wednesday
Vice President Kamala Harris is slated to speak in Indianapolis on Wednesday in one of the first stops for her presidential campaign. Vice President Harris will speak at an annual convention for the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta. This follows President Joe Biden’s decision over the weekend ending his bid for a second term.
Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl said he’s looking forward to Harris’ speech in Indianapolis this week.
Schmuhl gave his reaction to President Biden’s announcement to end his campaign. He thanked the president for his term and praised Biden’s move to step down.
On Monday, all 88 of Indiana’s delegates to the national convention endorsed Harris for president in addition to the state’s central committee. Schmuhl commented on the endorsement.
Lastly, Schmuhl said that he’s excited to see a growing younger population in the state’s delegates to the national convention. He said over 30 of the 88 delegates are under the age of 36.
On Tuesday, the Monroe County Democratic Party also endorsed Harris for President. Party Chair David Henry said in a statement, “Where President Biden healed our country after the disastrous pandemic and his predecessor’s best efforts to divide our country, President Kamala Harris will build on the Biden-Harris accomplishments for unity, growth, equality, justice, and opportunity for all in the next term.”
Monroe County Board of Commissioners
The Monroe County Board of Commissioners met on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024. Starting things off, Health Administrator Lori Kelley gave a series of updates from the Health Department.
Next, County Commissioner Penny Githens introduced a motion to approve the addendum to the Bluestone Storm Debris removal fund. She stated that the addendum requires an additional eighty thousand dollars, increasing the total amount but staying below one hundred thirty thousand dollars. Commissioners’ Administrator Angela Purdie spoke on this matter more, however, it is muted due to an apparent technical error. The addendum was approved unanimously by the Commissioners.
Lastly, the Commissioners talked about a change in personnel policy pertaining to parental and family leave for county employees. Speaking on this was County Attorney Molly Turner-King.
Commissioner Githens commented on the positive impact that the change will have on both employees and themselves, the employers.
Commissioner Lee Jones added to Githens’ sentiment, saying, “I agree with all of that. This is certainly a wonderful thing to be able to do for our employees and I just wish we had done it a little sooner. ” The ordinance was unanimously approved.
The Monroe County Commissioners regularly scheduled meeting on July 24th was canceled. They will meet again on July 31st.
The Richland-Bean Blossom School Board met on Monday, July 15th. Superintendent Dr. Jerry Sanders discussed a new form of communication for emergency situations to Richland-Bean Blossom School families.
He also said it would be helpful for non-emergency situations like alerting specific bus routes that are running late, and for translating the announcements into different languages.
The motion to approve the contract with Final Site Communications Program passed unanimously.
The next Richland-Bean Blossom School Board meeting will take place on Monday, August 19th.
