Monroe County Government Reopens After “Intrusion” Into Computer Network

Monroe County government offices reopened on Monday after being closed all last week.

County officials put out a press release Monday disclosing the cause of the closure – an “intrusion” into its computer network from an outside source named BlackSuit.

According to Reuters’ reporting, BlackSuit is a cybercriminal group responsible for data leaks across at least 95 organizations globally.

The County Commissioners wrote in a news release, “While we are actively looking into this matter with the help of third-party specialists, we do not yet know the extent of data that may have been affected. If you are concerned, it is always best practice to lock your credit down.”

Commissioners say that while the county is still looking into this, evidence suggests that no employee sensitive information has been misused in any way.

WFHB News contacted Commissioners’ Administrator Angela Purdie who declined to be interviewed. However, Purdie said the investigation is ongoing and the county will release updates as they become available.

The Commissioners said in the release, “As this is still early in the investigation, we yet do not know if vendor or public users personally identifiable information (PII) has been subject to unauthorized access. If PII has been subject to unauthorized access, we will provide the necessary notice required to protect those affected.”

For more information on reaching the credit bureaus Equifax, Experian and TransUnion to lock your credit, telephone numbers, addresses and website links are available below.

Brown County to Hear Ordinance on Allowing ATVs and UTVs

The Brown County Commissioners are expected to vote on an ordinance which would allow ATVs and UTVs to be driven on county roads only.

According to a report by Dakota Bruton of the Brown County Democrat, the ordinance would exclude the town of Nashville and state roads.

Brown County hosted two public meetings late last month in an effort to gauge public interest in such an ordinance.

During the public hearings, Brown County resident Greg DeLong said he’s opposed to the proposed policy.

Another local resident Michael Fulton said he believes the ordinance would disturb the peace and tranquility of the community.

Brown County resident Paul Hazelwood said he supports the ordinance, saying he believes ATVs and UTVs are safer and quieter than motorcycles.

Another supporter of the ordinance pushed back against the points made by those in opposition.

The Brown County Commissioners are expected to vote on the ordinance at 6 p.m. on July 17th at the Brown County Office Building located at 201 Locust Lane in Nashville.

City of Bloomington Launches Community Heat Survey

The City of Bloomington has launched a community heat survey in an effort to address extreme heat challenges caused by climate change.

From July 1st to August 1st, the city encourages residents to take a 10-minute survey which will be used to develop a comprehensive Extreme Heat Action Plan.

According to a press release, the survey is, “designed to gather valuable insights into how heat waves impact different neighborhoods and residents across Bloomington. This information will be instrumental in identifying areas most in need of cooling strategies and resources and will help guide the implementation of effective solutions such as tree plantings and green infrastructure.”

The city’s Economic and Sustainable Development department partnered with the IU Luddy School’s Healthy Cities Lab and the IU Environmental Resilience Institute for the survey as part of the “Beat the Heat” program. The community heat survey is also part of the ESD’s heat mitigation campaign called “Stay Cool Bloomington!”

The survey is available online for free. All responses are confidential and anonymous. Residents can access the survey by visiting bton.in/qsvVS.
