Listen Later

This is the WFHB Local News for Wednesday, June 11th, 2025.

In today’s newscast, we continue our series about teen mental health on Deep Dive: WFHB and Limestone Post Investigate. Today, we speak with several teens about their experiences with academic pressure and racism and how that relates to mental health. More in today’s feature report.

Also coming up in the next half hour, “A Very Stupid Scam” on Better Beware – your weekly consumer-watchdog segment on WFHB. More following today’s feature.

But first, the latest edition of Deep Dive:

This is Deep Dive: WFHB and Limestone Post Investigate where we look into issues regarding Health, Housing, and the Environment that directly impact residents of Monroe County. This month, we’re looking into the rising concern of declining teen mental health.

Content warning: this story mentions mental health struggles and suicide.

You can’t talk about teen mental health without talking to teens. Youth Radio Volunteer Victoria Deckard agreed to talk with us, and brought along her three friends Iraa, Joseph and Winnie. This is part two of our conversation with them. Last week you heard them talk about how social media and academic stress impacts their mental health. This week they dive deeper into academic pressure and racism.

The American Psychological Association reported in 2024 that 41 percent of teens with the highest rate of social media use said they had poor to very poor mental health. | Photo by Benedict Jones
