Board of Works Approves Closures for Student Housing and Convention Center Projects

The City of Bloomington Board of Public Works met on June 18th. The board approved the street and lane closures needed to perform utility work for the Hub II student housing development. These closures will take place in July. Engineering Field Specialist Kyle Baugh walked through the closures.

In addition, more lane closures and sidewalk diversions are to follow, due to the upcoming renovation of the Bloomington Convention Center. These closures will last significantly longer, ranging from the end of June to January 2026. Baugh explained it will also be the first of several closures needed to complete the project.

A contract from the City of Bloomington Street Division with Wise Building Solutions has been cancelled. This contract was for the development of 27 accessible A-D-A ramps on the south and west sides of the city. It was determined that the work would not be able to be completed in the timeline outlined in the contract, leading to a mutually-agreed cancellation. The task of building the A-D-A ramps has now been given to Groomer Construction.

Lastly, the Public Works Director, Adam Wason, outlined the amount of residents without power following the storms in Monroe County on June 18th.

The City of Bloomington Board of Public Works will hold their next meeting July 1st.

Richland Bean Blossom School Board Approves $40 Million Bond Issue

Skilman Construction Project Manager Martin Truesdell gave an update of the Skilman construction report. He claimed that the Edgewood Early Childhood Center should be open to teachers by July 28th and the center’s playground should be installed by early July.

He then gave updates on the construction projects inside Edgewood High School’s activity center. This included progress and their estimated completion. He then presented updates on the Primary School bathroom construction, which will be fully completed by the first or second week of school. He concluded with updates on the construction projects in Edgewood Intermediate School, which he said are all on schedule.

Later, the Board discussed the 2025 bonds timeline. Financial Advisor Matt Shoemaker presented and outlined a potential $40 million bond issue for 2025.

The first heat wave of the summer is here in Monroe County. Monday through Friday this week, temperatures are expected to reach at least 90 degrees. In today’s feature report, WFHB News Correspondents Ella Cummings and Max Schneider speak with Amanda Roach from Indiana University. Amanda Roach is University Director for Emergency Management and Continuity, overseeing the statewide team leading IU’s emergency planning and continuity efforts. She discusses how to prepare for severe heat and stay safe during extreme weather events. We turn now to that interview on the WFHB Local News.

It’s that time of year when some kids go to summer camp, but Camp Kesem isn’t your typical summer camp. Kesem is for kids with parents who have cancer. They get to do all the fun stuff kids do at camp, but they also draw strength from being around other kids feeling the same feelings about the challenges facing their families. After camp week is over, the kids can continue supporting each other through online meet-ups and other year-round family support. Kesem is staffed by volunteers at major universities and Indiana University has a particularly active chapter, with more than 100 students working at the local Kesem camp in Brown County. Madison Stratton and Naomi Gebremedhin are here to ask your help sending more kids to the best week of their life, on a new episode of Activate!, coming your way right now on the WFHB Local News.
