MCCSC Staffing Cuts Prompt Community Pushback
The Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees met on May 20th. This followed the announcement that the school corporation would eliminate 61 non-classroom jobs partially resulting from budget cuts after the passage of Senate Enrolled Act 1 at the Statehouse. During public comment, Monroe County Education Association Board Member-elect Erich Nolan expressed concerns about the budget cuts and the announcement that the school corporation would eliminate non-classroom jobs.
Then, MCEA President Jenny Noble Kuchera brought up a petition urging the school corporation to adopt a policy clarifying which positions would be eliminated.
MCEA Board Member Angie Shelton also commented on the non-classroom layoffs saying these are important positions for the school system. She said she disagrees with the school corporation’s determination to layoff employees who don’t make as much money as classroom employees.
Superintendent Dr. Markay Winston said in her 2-year strategy update that the school system hopes to save around 7 million dollars per year through staff reductions and leaving vacant positions open.
