WFHB News went to the polls this afternoon to interview voters, poll workers and the Monroe County Election Supervisor. Campaign signs scattered across the lawn outside Election Central contrasted sharply with the strictly nonpartisan atmosphere inside.

Election worker Rich Benak, who is also the engineer for WFHB’s Eco Report, explained how poll workers ensure a fair polling location.

Early voting started at the beginning of April. Monroe County Election Supervisor Kylie Farris told WFHB that over 5,000 votes were cast during the 28-day early voting period.

She said Indiana Senate Bill 10, which prohibits use of student IDs for voting, went back into effect during early voting after an injunction against it was stayed. Student IDs are no longer acceptable forms of identification.

Farris spoke about preparations for the primary election, including safety measures, the impact of Senate Bill 10 and efforts to ensure transparency.

WFHB interviewed Julia Vaughn, executive director of Common Cause Indiana, a nonpartisan organization created to strengthen American democracy. Vaughn talked about the importance of voting.

Up next, Youth Radio Director Jessie Grubb speaks with two poll workers at Election Central who are high school students. That’s coming up next on the Primary Election Day special on the WFHB Local News. Grubb also interviewed a poll worker at the Academy of Science and Entrepreneurship off Patterson Drive.

WFHB went to the Indiana Memorial Union earlier today to capture students’ perspectives in light of the Primary Election. One voter, before casting her ballot, says housing affordability is at the top of her mind.

We also spoke with two representatives from the organization Count Us IN outside the polls at the IMU.

Then, the news department traveled to Tri-North Middle School, where we spoke with two voters who reside on the Northwest side of Bloomington.

WFHB News spoke with local journalist Dave Askins at the Boys and Girls Club. Askins discusses B Square Bulletin’s Primary Election Day coverage, coming up next on the local news.

Before the interview, Askins spoke with Regina Moore, who served as the City Clerk of Bloomington for 16 years from 2000 to 2015. Moore says she made a “rookie mistake” when filling out her ballot.

Lastly, we spoke with another voter, Jenny Noble-Kuchera after she cast her ballot at the Boys and Girls Club on Lincoln Street.
