The Statehouse Roundup

The Statehouse Roundup is a brief, weekly segment focusing on Indiana news and politics. Tune in each Thursday during the WFHB Local News to hear a recap on news and politics on the state level.

While the red wave faltered on the national level, in Indiana - the GOP won every statewide race. Republicans in Indiana will retain their supermajority in the Statehouse as the midterms draw to a close.

In the U.S. Senate incumbent Todd Young defeated Democratic challenger Tom McDermott and Libertarian James Sceniak. Young won about 59 percent of the vote, while McDermott fell short at about 38 percent.

Republican Diego Morales won the Indiana Secretary of State race over Democrat Destiny Wells by about 14 percentage points. Morales faced sexual assault allegations from at least two women. He’s also alleged to be a denier of the 2020 election results. Many predicted the race for secretary of state to be a tight race or even to expect a Wells victory. The results of Tuesday night showed that a GOP candidate with a checkered past could win with relative ease at the polls.

With about 95 percent of the votes in, 10 Democrats have won seats in the state senate, while 40 Republicans were elected to office. According to data from the New York Times, 69 Republicans have gained seats in the state House of Representatives, while Democrats won 28 seats.

Here locally in Monroe County, a report by the news outlet ‘the B-Square Bulletin’ showed that 6.6 thousand ballots missed in the first vote totals, made for a marginal victory for Republican Dave Hall in the House District 62 race. Democrat Penny Githens lost by 37 votes after the missed ballots were counted in District 62, which encompasses portions of Monroe, Jackson and Brown counties.

The Monroe County Community School Corporation referendum, which increased property taxes to raise teacher salaries, passed with approximately 69 percent of the vote.

Three school board seats were up for election this year. In district 1, Erin Wyatt won over her opponents Tabetha Crouch and Byron Turner, garnering about 51 percent of the vote. Ashley Pirani won the District 3 school board seat with 46 percent of the vote. Lastly, Brandon Shurr ran unopposed in the 7th district.
