Bloomington City Council Approves Expanded Bedroom Rentals in Owner-Occupied Homes
The Bloomington City Council met on November 19th. The council heard an ordinance that would amend the Unified Development Ordinance of City Code, allowing owner occupied homes to rent out up to three individual bedrooms. Deputy Clerk Susan Stoll walked through the legislation.
Development Services Manager Eric Greulich outlined that this would remove owner occupancy restrictions in the city code.
Councilmember Dave Rollo said he has concerns about the proposal. He said in his view, the city should air on the side of caution.
Rollo introduced an amendment to limit it to one adult per bedroom, saying he believes it would prevent overcrowding. Greulich said there are challenges to this amendment, however.
Rollo’s amendment failed. Ultimately, the council voted 7-2 in favor of the ordinance with Councilmembers Andy Ruff and Dave Rollo voting no. The next Bloomington City Council meeting will take place on December 3rd.
