Monroe County Commissioners

The Monroe County Commissioners met on September 11th. They began the meeting with a moment of silence for 9/11 victims, and read a proclamation declaring September 15, 2024, as Lake Monroe Day.

Next, County Health administrator, Lori Kelley, updated the commissioners on wastewater concentrations of COVID-19 having increased as of September 3rd. There has been a small increase in emergency room visits with COVID-related symptoms, as well. The Health Department still has COVID tests available. The public can walk in Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. to pick them up.

Planning Director Jacki Jelen, shared that they will be holding a public hearing on the County Development Ordinance to receive public feedback. She said the public hearing will be on September 24th at 5:30 P.M. in the Monroe County Courthouse in the Judge Nat U Hill Room.

Fleet and Building Manager Richard Crider, requested $47,850 be approved for a replacement compressor in the chiller at the Charlotte Zietlow Justice Center. Commissioner Jones said, “Considering that the jail is a part of that facility I think it’s extremely important that they not be allowed to become overheated.”

The jail was a recurring topic of conversation. The commissioner also approved another request from Crider for $11,124 toward the purchase of polycarbonate lenses to replace light fixture lenses that are becoming brittle and breakable in the jail.

Later in the meeting the commissioners heard from County Attorney Jeff Cockerill, who asked the commissioners to approve the issuance of General Obligation bonds. Cockerill explained the bonds would be used to fund county equipment and facilities maintenance such as projects including airport improvements, park improvements, jail repairs, and more. The GO Bond is not expected to exceed $3.1 million.

The commissioners approved the G – O bond issuance 3-0. The next Monroe County Commissioners meeting will be held on September 25th.
