A cryptographer looks at a page of symbols that appears random to everyone else, and sees structure, meaning, and communication. Students in safeguarding situations do the same thing. Behaviour that looks disruptive, withdrawn, or inconsistent is rarely the problem itself, it is the message about the problem.

Learning to ask what a behaviour is communicating rather than simply responding to it, recognising indirect disclosure as protective rather than evasive, and building a staff culture of curiosity over judgement could transform how your school understands the students it is trying to protect.
