Why do people care about Paris? Or Rome? What about Giza or Damascus? Do we like a place because it has fancy buildings or is there something more? What can we learn from history?

Is this all just a history lesson, or can we learn something about ourselves from history?

I propose history contains contemporary lessons: how we see ourselves and others, the importance of shifting perspective, and the difficulty of changing perspective.
