What the Bible Actually Says

What About the Devil? Rethinking Satan in the Bible

Listen Later

Is Satan really the main villain in the Bible?

If Sin is a power, Death is an enemy, and humanity is sacred space… then what about Satan?

For many Christians, the devil has become the organizing center of the biblical story—the explanation for temptation, suffering, evil, and everything that has gone wrong. But is that actually how Scripture presents him?

In this episode, we slow down and examine what the Bible actually says.

We’ll explore:

  • What the Hebrew word satan really means
  • Why the serpent in Genesis is not called Satan
  • How the Old Testament portrays the “adversary”
  • Why Satan’s role develops across the biblical story
  • Why Paul centers Sin and Death—not Satan—as humanity’s primary enemies
  • How overemphasizing Satan can unintentionally produce shame instead of freedom

The goal isn’t to deny Satan’s reality. It’s to put him back into the place Scripture gives him—and recover the much bigger story of the Gospel.

Because according to Paul, the Gospel isn’t primarily about defeating a rebel angel.

It’s about liberating humanity from the reign of Sin and Death and reclaiming God’s sacred space.
