What are Budgeted and Entitled Presence?

Listen Later

The concept of “budgeted presence” is exploring how we navigate our own needs while interacting with others needs.

Dr. Jeanine Turner from Georgetown University explains that budgeted presence involves focusing on one’s own needs without being overly concerned about others’ actions. This approach often leads to managing multiple conversations simultaneously, highlighting the challenge of maintaining genuine connections in a digital landscape.

Then there is “entitled presence,” which is the attempt to control social interactions by minimizing distractions. “You’re trying to control their attention by controlling the technology,” she notes, emphasizing the delicate balance between personal needs and social etiquette.

These insights shed light on the complexities of social interactions in a digital age. As we navigate our presence and interactions, it’s crucial to find a balance that respects both personal needs and the value of genuine connections.
