The writer of Hebrews has spent 9 ½ chapters reminding these saved Jewish brethren of how much better it is to live under grace and the sacrifice of Jesus than it was to live under the Law. Remember, these were being persecuted for having followed Jesus (great afflictions, reproached and made a “gazingstock,” property seized - 10:32-34). Because of that some were forsaking Jesus and returning to the Law. As the writer reminds them (and us) of the advantages of following Jesus he points out in vv. 19-20 the great blessing and advantage God has given us as His children. We can have boldness “to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus . . . ” "The holiest"was a reference to the Holy of Holies, the very presence of God. Not every Jew could go there. Only the High Priest could, but only once a year, and only with blood. But in Christ Jesus, we can go boldly before the “throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Jesus has opened the way for us “through the veil, that is to say, his flesh . . . ” The veil was the thick curtain that separated the holy place from “the holiest” in the temple. When Jesus was crucified the veil of the Temple was torn from the top down. This pictured the opening up of a new way to God which came through the sacrifice of Jesus. The Law never saved anyone but was a schoolmaster to bring men to Christ (Galatians 3:24). The sacrifice of Jesus blotted “out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross . . . ” Now, Jesus serves as our Great High Priest after the order of Melchisedec (Psalm 110:4). Hebrews 4:14-15 -- Now, we have access to God through Him -- “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus . . . ” (I Timothy 2:5). Because of these great blessings and advantages God has given us as His children and under the “new covenant,” there are some things we must do. We are encouraged to do them in 3 “let us” statements here in chapter ten. They are:
I. LET US DRAW NEAR -- Hebrews 10:22.
II. LET US HOLD FAST (THE PROFESSION OF OUR FAITH).
III. LET US CONSIDER ONE ANOTHER.
(Note: The reference to "Ezekiel 38" in this message is supposed to be Exodus 38. Sometimes the mouth gets so far ahead of the brain, we don't say what we mean to say.)
