WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE? (PT. 2) -- HEBREWS 10:24-25
I don’t know why you came to church today, but I know why you should have come. This is important because it seems that many today are confused about it. Church attendance is no longer a priority in America because many people don’t understand the purpose for it. Opinion: Some view it as merely coming to sing a few songs and then sit and listen to the preacher. There was a time when “going to church” was the norm, even expected. Certainly those who claimed to be “Christians” went to church, and those who wanted no part of it didn't. My, how times have changed! Church attendance is not the “fad” of the day, and that is a tragedy. God not only intended for us to gather together, but there are definite purposes we are to fulfill when we do. We Are Here For EXALTATION - To Praise God. We don’t meet for social advancement or personal satisfaction. We meet “to proclaim the excellencies of Him” who has saved us. There is more to worship than just praise, but I can say with confidence that if you refuse to praise God then there's not much worship going on. Hebrews 13:15 says, “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Psalm 150:6 instructs us, “Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.” And we know that we are to give this praise In the midst of the assembly of believers. Psalm 100 tells us to “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” Don’t let God catch you coming to this place and refusing to praise Him. HE DESERVES OUR PRAISE! We come here for EXHORTATION - To Encourage One Another (which we covered last week). We also come here for EXPOSITION - To hear the word of God presented. Today I want to spend a little more time on the reasons we come together. Our culture wants to privatize spirituality, so this morning we will see why that doesn’t work. There are three points to be made here.
I. WE HAVE A BROTHER TO ENCOURAGE -- Hebrews 10:24.
II. WE HAVE A CHURCH TO ATTEND -- Hebrews 10:25a.
III. WE HAVE A LORD TO MEET -- Hebrews 10:25b.
