TJ checks in with her friend, Anastasia, about her experience growing up in New Mexico. Interestingly enough, being multi-racial is such a shared experience but also seems to be one of loneliness... an experience about figuring out one's place in a cross-section of culture and race. While race is a man-made construct, it does not make the impacts of racism or racial divides any less difficult to navigate. Anastasia deals with being both fetishized and simultaneously lumped into a racial group for the ease of others' understanding. Is this experience truly necessary for our family who wants to identify as multi-racial? Have Americans limited ourselves to understanding how a person truly and fully identifies? Either way, Anastasia is on the path to figuring things out and allowing space for her daughter's experience to be whatever she desires it to be.
