Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1, NIV)

This week we come to The Fall; when humanity exchanged trust in God for the illusion of autonomy. The serpent’s question “Did God really say?” (tempting us to define good and evil for ourselves) and the deception that the fruit would make us “like God,” (tempting us to see autonomy and self rule) are the foundation of our sin and suffering; humanity fell when we stopped trusting God’s word and started trusting our own desires.

BUT the story ultimately points to Christ, the Second Adam, who defeats the serpent and restores the life we lost.
