What Came First: Proteins or DNA? An Argument for Intelligent Design ep. 16

Listen Later

In this episode, I discuss the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology, which is the observation that all living things have DNA, RNA and Protein, and that DNA codes for RNA, and RNA codes for Protein. This "DNA -> RNA -> Protein" system undergirds all living things on Earth. The question is this: Could this system come about by random chance in the prebiotic soup of the early Earth? Assuming there were plenty of DNA nucleotides floating around, could they come together to form a small, 300 nucleotide, meaningful piece of DNA? Also, if all the necessary amino acids were present, could they slam together and form a meaningful/functional protein in a reasonable amount of time? Let's explore some of the probability calculations provided by Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, a former geophysicist and philosopher of science, who has looked at this system extensively. Here's a link to his video on the probability calculation for a 150-amino acid protein forming by chance: https://youtu.be/JQ3hUlU0vR4
