People who feel they are loving, accepting and compassionate can act unloving, judgmental and cruel. It's always best to practice what we preach. If we believe when they go low, we should go high, then that's what we need to do. Always. Unconditionally. Without exception. Otherwise, we lose credibility to those people we want to influence the most.
