Cockroaches are one of the most common pest problems Houston homeowners face. And one of the most frustrating things about them is that they don't just show up in dirty homes. Even spotless houses can develop a serious roach problem. So what actually causes cockroaches to come inside?
There are two species Houston homeowners deal with most often, and they behave pretty differently. German cockroaches are the smaller ones — and the ones behind true infestations. They hitchhike into homes inside cardboard boxes, grocery bags, luggage, or secondhand furniture. You can bring them in without ever knowing it. And once they're inside, they reproduce fast. A single female can produce more than two hundred eggs over her lifetime. That's why a small problem can turn into a big one in a matter of weeks.
American cockroaches are the larger, reddish-brown ones. They typically live outside in mulch, dead leaves, woodpiles, and tree debris. During Houston summers, when the heat gets extreme and outdoor water sources dry up, they start looking for relief inside. They get in through worn weatherstripping, broken window screens, gaps around pipes, and open garage doors.
So what's actually drawing them in? A few habits show up again and again. Leaving pet food and water bowls out overnight is a big one — cockroaches are most active at night, and an uncovered bowl is an easy meal. Stovetop grease that doesn't get wiped down. Pantry items in their original packaging instead of sealed containers. Leaky pipes or faucets giving them a reliable water source. Overwatered indoor plants. Trash or compost bins that aren't sealed tightly.
Outside the home, dead leaf piles, standing water after rain, and empty pots sitting in the yard all create nesting spots right next to the foundation. The more roaches breeding near the exterior, the more likely some find their way in.
Prevention helps a lot. Seal gaps around doors and pipes. Fix leaks. Store food properly. Keep the yard clear. But when cockroaches are already showing up regularly — especially during the day, which signals a large population behind the walls — prevention isn't enough on its own.
