WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT

It’s not about all the things people associate with this holiday. There is perhaps nothing wrong with much of that, but Christmas is not really a holiday, it’s a HOLY DAY. Holy means sacred and that has to do with God. Christmas is all about the birth of Christ. This is what makes Christmas so significant that people will shut down factories, government, businesses, close schools, make people travel long distances to spend that day with their families, give gifts they can’t afford, and celebrate with festivities, lights, specially decorated trees in elaborately decorated houses, and food. We must know who this Jesus Christ is to know what Christmas all is about.

Who is this Jesus Christ, whose birthday has changed time itself and the course of history? What is it about Him that causes billions to worship Him, study and obey His every word? Why do we celebrate His birth every year? To answer these questions, we need to understand something called the Trinity, which means within the essence and being of the one true God there are three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They are one and yet they are distinct. This one God in three Persons created the universe and all humans. He fashioned a perfect paradise for them to live, a place called Eden. A mystery in the Bible is something we would not know if God didn’t tell us about it. Here’s how it describes the coming of the Son of God into the world: “Great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh.” (1Tim.3:16)

Why would the Son of God who lived in paradise in heaven come to this old dirty earth? Well, God had warned Adam and Eve not to disobey Him or they would die. They did disobey Him and their spirits did die, though their body continued to live for years. Their spirit died to God. Consequently they began to live in sin and brought death and disaster on all humans on the earth. “All have sinned,” the Bible says (Rm.3:23), and “The wages of sin is death.” (Rm.6:23) We could not save ourselves from sin and death so God decided to save us by sending one of the Persons of God into the world to become a human (one of us) so He could take the punishment for mankind’s sin. (See John 1:1-3,14; and 1 Tim. 1:15; and Rm.5:8)
