♪What do a sheep and a fish have in common? – ヒツジとサカナの共通点は?

Listen Later

Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in to Time for English.

What do a sheep and a fish have in common? The answer is (that) they use the same word whether they are in the singular or in the plural.

Last week, we used the sentence "How many sheep are there in the flock?" Do you know how to count the sheep? One sheep, two sheep, three sheep. You don't say" two sheeps or three sheeps". If you see a lot of sheep, that means there is a flock of sheep.

The same goes for fish. For example, I went fishing yesterday. I caught three fish, NOT three fishes. I went to the supermarket and I bought some fish, NOT some fishes. And a lot of fish swimming together in the same direction is a school of fish.

There are many more words in English that are both singular and plural, like sheep and fish, and YOU as well.

Now, would you like to try a quiz? I'll read three sentences. Please listen carefully and choose the one that is NOT correct grammatically. Ready?
1. How many fish did you catch yesterday?
2. How much fish did you buy in the supermarket?
3. How many apples are on the tree?
