What does born again mean?

Listen Later

Maybe you have heard about being “born again” but what does that mean? In the Bible, Jesus talks to a man called Nicodemus and said, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”  You can find this story in John 3 of the Bible.

Nicodemus was a Jewish man who knew the ten commandments and believed that one day God would send a Messiah, someone who would establish a new Kingdom, rule, and reign here on the earth. What Nicodemus didn’t realize was that Kingdom was a spiritual kingdom.

So Jesus said unless one is born again, he could not see the kingdom.

Continuing on in the conversation, Jesus declares, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

Later in the book of John, people asked Jesus, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” They were used to a set of rules, the ten commandments, in order to gain approval from God.

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

And a little later he states, “Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.”

The way to be born again and have eternal life, opening our eyes to the spiritual kingdom here on earth, is by simply believing in Jesus Christ. Receive his free gift of salvation and you will not be judged! All your sins are forgiven, the past, present, and future! That’s why it’s called Good News! The word repent simply means change the way you think, specifically about God. You realize you have sinned and now put your faith in Christ that he is the son of God, came and died for your sins, then rose from the dead!
When you confess that Jesus is Lord, and believe this in your heart, immediately your spirit within you is born again and you step into eternal life immediately. Then you can have a genuine relationship with God.

You can simply pray this to God to be born again, “Jesus, I believe God sent you to die for my sins. I put my faith in you.”

That’s it! You can do that in your home, in the car or at church. It’s that simple. And then the only command God gives us to live by is to love. Love others as God has loved you.

Do you have to go to church to be born again? No, but you will want to go to church to be encouraged. I strongly encourage you to look for a church that focuses on the new covenant and make some friends that will encourage you.
