Throughout our lives, we have a variety of authority figures. Parents, teachers, coaches, bosses, law enforcement, IRS, bank all hold positions of authority in our lives. In Matthew 21, chief priests and elders ask who gave Jesus the authority to teach and baptize. Sometimes, we even challenge Jesus' authority to be in charge of our lives. When it comes to accepting Jesus' authority, He would rather we be honest and late, than to be dishonest and not show up at all. The real problem we have with allowing God to be the leader in our lives, to live according to His will rather than our will, that His plan is better than our plan, is that we don't completely believe in Him.
