So what does “work out” mean? Why does God give us this command in scripture?
Salvation was done for us and we weren’t involved in the accomplishment of it, but with salvation, there is a continual process in us. We are saved; Christ has borne our sins; Christ has done all for us; what He did was sufficient and when Jesus said “it is finished” all that needed to be done was finished; and because Jesus lives we have eternal life, however – though we are saved, we are not in place of relaxation or inactivity; our life is still lived out on the earth, in a world full of temptation, continuous trouble, full of sin, we have a physical body/mind, we have an enemy seeking to devour us and so there is a risk, it is necessary enduring and cooperation, there is also a growing, maturing that is required.
