What Does It Take to Turn Around a Fleet with a Sagging Safety Record?

Listen Later

What can trucking companies do to improve their safety records? Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, fleets live and die by their CSA BASICs in the Safety Measurement System. CSA considers nearly everything a fleet does, from roadside violations and crashes to compliance audit results. It doesn't take much to slip down into the risky category, and it's a long, hard climb back to respectability.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute looked at a diverse group of failing fleets that turned themselves around. Virginia Tech senior researcher Matt Camden shared the results of those case studies at the Fleet Safety Conference, and he's our guest on this episode of HDT Talks Trucking. Listen to get insights into how changing driver hiring policies, building a better safety culture, and adopting some advanced safety technology can contribute to improved safety performance and better CSA scores.
