Jesus determines to the lift the spirits of the church at Smyrna by letting them know He is aware of their hardships and poverty.  He reminds them that they are rich and encourages the church to not be afraid of any of the things that they are about to suffer.   Jesus warns them saying that the devil was about to throw some of them into prison.  He ends by encouraging the people to stay faithful to death.  In that way they will not be hurt by the second death we know of as hell.
