What Does Philippians 3:18-19 Mean?

Listen Later

Philippians 3:18–19 (NIV): 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.

In Philippians chapter three, Paul appeals to the church in Philippi to follow his example as he pursues Christ above everything else in his life.

Paul knows that there are people who may appear to be followers of Christ, but in reality, they reject the true gospel message that Paul preaches.

In today's 2-minute Bible Study, you will discover:

  • The culture at the time of this letter to help bring this verse alive
  • Two different groups Paul might be referring to in Philippi that are enemies of the cross of Christ (one of them was possibly in the church at Philippi)
  • What Paul means in the original Greek language when he writes "their destiny is destruction."
