Today we are talking about the expectations we put on our relationships.
Lately, I've been dealing with some family issues, and it got me thinking about the boundaries and expectations I've been silently imposing on people in my life. This applies to all kinds of relationships: with my mom, my husband, and even my kids.
I used to have these unspoken expectations just because of the nature of the relationship. But when those expectations weren't met, I'd feel the resentment which I began to realize isn't fair to them. It took me a while to realize this and I began setting some life-giving boundaries.
So, think about your relationships, especially with close family members…
Where are you sacrificing your needs or expecting others to fulfill unspoken expectations?
Are these expectations communicated?
You don't have to abandon yourself for others. You get to meet your needs and set boundaries in a way that feels good to you.
Challenge yourself to have those difficult conversations and release unrealistic expectations. It's not always easy, but there are options.
You can redefine your relationships and choose what's best for you and your family.
Remember, you're never stuck and you always have choices.
