Mercy is the active expression of the character of God as it exhibits itself through tangibly meeting the needs of those who are afflicted in such a way that God gets the glory for it.

It unfolds itself in 5 different stages: mind (see), emotion (sense, search and suffer) and will (serve). The middle 3 stages are best defined as compassion - the literal entering into the sufferings of others.
