What does it really mean to speak “good English”? In this episode of Radio Languages, we explore how accents, power, and prestige shape the way we perceive languages. Using examples from English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, we reflect on who decides what a “correct” language is, why some accents are valued more than others, and how migration and linguistic identity can lead to both discrimination and inclusion. We also discuss whether language learners should aim to sound like native speakers, or whether effective communication matters more in today’s multilingual world.
