Women have been part of technology from the beginning, but IT is still overwhelmingly male. So what needs to change?

In this episode of What is IT?, Doug sits down with Taylor Anderson to talk about what it really means to be a woman in technology today.

Taylor’s path into IT was anything but traditional. She studied Arabic, played trombone, climbed Mount Fuji, advised CIOs, worked in sales, and eventually found her way inside IT itself. Along the way, she discovered that some of the biggest barriers women face aren’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s simply being the most senior person in the room and watching someone direct the question to the man sitting beside you.

But this conversation isn’t just about the barriers.

Taylor talks about the strengths women bring to technology, including empathy, perspective, curiosity, and the ability to connect technical decisions to the people affected by them. She also makes the case that AI may create entirely new ways for women and others traditionally underrepresented in tech to learn, experiment, and find their way into the field.

Her advice to the next generation is simple:

Be curious. Break things. Make mistakes. Ask for help.
