As our kids grow up and go through adolescence, we see them trying to figure out just what life is all about. As parents, we try to guide them through this maze and make wise choices about their actions and their future. My wife and I have just sent our oldest boy off to college, and that is a huge step in becoming mature and independent. Life is challenging at all stages, and we each have to figure it out for ourselves. The well-known writer and poet, Carl Sandburg, said “Life is like an onion: you peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep.” I can agree with that!

In all of the confusion and uncertainty about life, where can we turn for wisdom and direction? I have found that the Bible, God’s Word, has what I need. There are plenty of references to life as a “shadow,” a “vapor” – something temporary and insubstantial. But check out what Jesus said in John 10:10 – He told his listeners, “…I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” And 2 Corinthians 9:8 tells us, “God is able to bless youabundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

Isn’t that the kind of full, satisfying life we all want? And we can have it as we obey God, serve other people, and share with them the Good News that Jesus Christ came to rescue them and give them abundant life.
