What Is On The GED Language Arts Test?

Listen Later

In this episode, we highlight what's on the GED Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA) subtest. The test evaluates reading comprehension and writing skills, focusing on understanding, analysis, and clear communication.

It is a single test covering both reading and writing, administered on a computer at a testing center or online (with qualifying scores on the GED Ready test).

The RLA test is 150 minutes long, with a 10-minute break between Part I (72 minutes) and Part II (65 minutes). The questions include multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, drop-down, and an essay question (extended response).

You must also write a well-structured essay of at least 300 words (Extended Response) analyzing and comparing two opposing arguments, identifying stronger evidence and reasoning.

We highlight that the test stresses the ability to express ideas clearly and effectively in writing, including grammar, punctuation, and organization, and that familiarizing yourself with the test format and identifying areas requiring further study is key. To be successful on the GED Language test, you should be familiar with reading and writing concepts, including grammar.
