The Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is a collective global initiative by the major cement producers with operations in more than a hundred countries. CSI members believe that there's a robust business case for the pursuit of Sustainable development. Put together, these corporations account for the majority of the world’s cement production around the globe.Over the time span of 10 years, CSI has majorly targeted on understanding, managing and minimizing the impacts of cement production and use by addressing a variety of problems which include global climate change, fuel use, worker health and safety, mobile emissions, concrete usage, and quarry management.
The purpose of the CSI is to:
In 1999, under the auspices of the WBCSD(World Business Council for Sustainable Development), ten leading top cement companies commissioned the Battelle Memorial Institute to conduct a freelance analysis into how the cement business may meet these property challenges. Battelle's final report, toward a property Cement business, was discharged in Gregorian calendar month 2002.
The report lists eight major topics that are shaping the Indian cement industry's path toward an additional property future over the subsequent twenty years:
The Agenda for Action:
The cement companies saw the Battelle recommendations by issue an Agenda for Action, outlining individual and joint actions by the business. Launched in July 2002, the Agenda for Action focuses on six vital issues:
