What is the Origin of Fear?! (And how to OVERCOME IT)

Listen Later

Genesis 3:10

  • Context: God is calling for Adam and Eve after they sinned, they have just come out from hiding and God asked why they hid
    • “He (Adam) replied ‘I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked’”
    • This is the first mention of fear in the Bible, and it is after the Fall.
    • This is because Fear is a direct result of sin and the subsequent break in our relationship with God. So, when you feel fear, that is a pretty good indication that there is a disconnect between you and God.
    • Physiologically, Fear is a natural response to circumstances and situations around us and can serve us by alerting us to danger and the need to change something
    • HOWEVER God commands us not to live in a state of fear, which means if we are constantly walking in fear, we are likely sinning.
    • Spiritually, Fear is the opposite of faith - it is faith that the bad/undesired outcome is going to happen instead of trusting and having faith that God will work everything out for the good of those who love Him in accordance with His will (Romans 8:28)
    • Instead of giving into the fear, explore where it is coming from.
    • Ask God where there is any disconnect so that you can repent of any sin, receive forgiveness, and walk in perfect fellowship with God.
    • Jesus’ sacrifice restores our ability to experience fellowship with God as they experienced it in the Garden. Once we accept Christ, we can enjoy Eden-like fellowship with God. We actually experience even closer fellowship with God because He lives in us via the Holy Spirit, and we can walk with Him every day as Adam and Eve did before the fall.
    • BUT it’s up to us to choose that fellowship, and it’s our responsibility to keep short accounts with God by quickly confessing and turning from our sin.
    • When we feel fear, there is typically going to be a root sin that it’s connected to. Choose to be humble and get really honest with yourself.
    • If we want to overcome fear for good, we must choose to be humbly honest with ourselves.
    • Where is there unresolved sin in your life? The sin at the foot of your fear may seem unrelated, but if you ask God to reveal it to you and honestly trace the thoughts, feelings, and actions, you’ll see the connection.
    • ACTION STEP: Where are you feeling fear in your life? Get curious about it and ask God to reveal the sin that it’s connected to so you can repent and walk in total connection with Him again. Journal what He shows you and your thoughts around it.
