What is Wrong with the Old Life?

“You will never live the new life until you acknowledge that God is the creator of and the reason for Life.” -- Lordship!

I believe it’s difficult for us to understand where we are in Christ until we take an honest look at where we are without Christ.

Ephesians 2:1-3 (ESV)
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.


1. We were dead!
You were dead in the trespasses and sins.

Romans 3:23 (ESV)
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Ephesians 4:18 (ESV)
We are alienated from the life of God

2. We were disobedient.

Ephesians 2:2-3a (ESV)
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind…

a. We followed the world
b. We followed Satan
c. We followed our own passions and desires

Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

3. We were condemned.

Ephesians 2:3b (ESV)
...and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Hebrews 10:31 (ESV)
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

But as one bible commentator states:
“God will act in a righteous manner, not in unrighteous revenge or in an outburst of anger. He will punish sin and sinners justly.
The good news for the Christian is that God’s wrath has been poured out not on us but on the Savior.”
