This past Sunday, Pastor Hunter Gillis preached a message entitled “What King is This?” Pastor Hunter walked us through Matthew 21, where as Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds asked, “Who is this?” a “proper, profitable, personal, pressing question.” Looking at both His ride and His rule, we see a King who comes “gentle and riding on a donkey,” Zechariah 9:9. Through Matthew 11, Jesus invites, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened… and you will find rest.” He is a King who rules with gentleness and humility, inviting us to take His yoke and learn from Him.

Title: What King is This? Hunter Gillis
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away. “This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna[d] in the highest heaven! “When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this? “The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Matthew 21:1-11
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked.“Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 16:13-16 (NIV)
“Where Jesus comes he makes a stir, and raises a question question. “Who is this?” Is a proper, profitable, personal, pressing question. Let [the] reader make this enquiry concerning Jesus and never rest till he knows the answer.”
–Charles Spurgeon
⭑ His Ride
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)
⭑ His Rule
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
His temper is mild. He comes not in wrath to take vengeance, but in mercy to work salvation. He is meek to suffer the greatest injuries and indignities for Sion’s cause, meek to bear with the follies of Sion’s own children…He is easy of access; easy to be entreated. He is meek not only as teacher, but as a ruler; he rules by love. His government is mild and gentle, and his law is not written in the blood of his subjects but in his own. His yoke is easy.
–Matthew Henry
