Ephesians 5:21-6:8
The more you focus on feeling loved yourself, the more empty you will be.
Dallas Willard: “The Way of Jesus knows no submission outside the context of mutual submission of all to all.”
Submission is giving and receiving for the sake of Christ.
Submission is a requirement for love. No submission, no love.
1. We’ve misunderstood love in marriage
Love is so much bigger than mutual happiness.
Wives and husbands are to submit to one another.
Husbands and wives are to lay down their lives for one another.
God calls every husband and every wife to lay down their lives for each other because He wants to raise up something infinitely better!
God can’t raise up what you don’t lay down.
When you love each other like Jesus does, you get to experience Jesus love in your marriage!
Biblical marriage requires personal sacrifice.
2. We’ve misunderstood love in family relationships.
You submit to your parents by loving them and respecting them.
We exasperate our children by making everything about performance or perfection. Our goal as parents is more than outward behavior - it’s about character development.
Help your kids experience Jesus!
Want to experience real love in your family? Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
3. We’ve misunderstood how to relate to authority.
Don’t miss the parallel here. “serve your authority figures as if they were Jesus - with all your heart - wholeheartedly” This sounds just like wives submitting to their husbands as under the Lord. In other words, your boss isn’t God. God is your boss and the work we do, we do out of reverence to Christ.
Submit yourself to the Lord. Submit yourself to the work of God here. Submit yourself to Pastor Christopher and let’s see what our God can do through us!
