In this episode we welcome Dr. Deirdre Sommerlad-Rogers, who is an expert in Criminology and in particular serial killers. We talk about what a serial killer actually is, is there a connection between mental illness and serial killers, and what the types of serial killers are. From the sensationalized media coverage, to the fact about how many killers there are among us, and some interesting facts about women killers. Is serial killing about a lack of empathy? Is there one defining factor that leads to serial killing? Tune in and find out!
A serial killer is typically a person who murders three or more people, usually in service of abnormal psychological gratification, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant period of time between them. Different authorities apply different criteria when designating serial killers. For example, while most authorities set a threshold of three murders, others extend it to four or lessen it to two. The FBI defines serial killing as "a series of two or more murders, committed as separate events, usually, but not always, by one offender acting alone".
