What Makes Transitions So Difficult? | Rebekka Helford

You look at a pool of water.
It is not deep.
It is not murky.
You can see the bottom.
You bask in the sun as warmth washes over you.
You look at this pool and know that it is safe, but there is a fear.
The fear comes from the knowledge that you won’t be warm the moment you enter.
That warmth will evaporate the moment your toe breaks the surface.
There will other sensations of cold, discomfort, and instability.
But there will also be other sensations: Exhilaration.
Accomplishment.
Weightlessness.
The pool is not an enemy.
It is a vessel for transition.
This is a very minor transition that most people face in the summer months as they visit their local pools and beaches.
Yet, people make transitions through life that are more challenging.
That demand more.
That inherently create change.
Transitions are not necessarily good nor evil.
Given that, “How do you deal with difficult transitions?”
Do you shy away and try to hold on to what is familiar?
