Paul was telling the Corinthian brethren that coveting the best gift profits nothing if they don't have love. They will be just like a clanging cymbal, devoid of the Holy Spirit. 
Yahweh is not impressed with us when we seek vain glory, but rather a spirit filled attitude and service with love.
