Very good read
Karen Wyatt is a particular favorite of mine. This book was a very good read for hospice chaplains and those who serve in those areas.
Stories to Live By
I have been reading books on the subject of death and dying ever since the 60s when Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross broke the silence about a topic Americans have a hard time discussing. Karen Wyatt's book, "What Really Matters, 7 Lessons for Living from the Stories of the Dying" left me mesmerized, thoughtful and reflective. ( Full disclosure, as they say on TV: my sister, Jeanne McCafferty, edited Karen's book and it was through her that I came to read it, for which I am grateful!)
For those of us interested in living life more consciously, the wisdom of those who have reached the end of the road is precious to us who may have more time. I found the stories Karen chose to tell riveting and I especially appreciated her own self reflections on what she was going through with particular people at different times.
Karen's patients were blessed to have her as their physician at the end of life and we are blessed to have this book as we wend our own way down the road.
Death is the greatest lesson
This book is one I will return to time and time again. Its rich tapestry of stories and lessons feels like a whole education in death and dying. The author uses compelling vignettes from her varied experience in hospice care and profiles real people who were some of her greatest teachers. I love this book for its structure, language, symmetry and content. You will laugh and cry and have several aha moments as you proceed from one chapter to the next. As a hospice volunteer, I feel the truth in the author's words and her authenticity shines through on every page. A wonderful gift to us all, this book deserves a place on every seeker's bookshelf.
What Really Matters
This is a very important book for people with serious diseases and their caregivers. As the wife of a man with terminal cancer, I highly recommend it.
Interesting and practical
I enjoyed reading the book and the depth of many thoughts. Especially there are valuable and helpful hints about what it means to live in the NOW. I do not like that Bible quotations with questionable interpretations are linked to otherwise valuable information. This may irritate people who have different religious opinions.
