What Self Imposed Handicaps Have YOU Put Under Your Saddle?

Listen Later

In the past I played more golf than I do today. I played enough to establish a handicap. After years of keeping basically the same handicap, I made a change that dropped four strokes from my handicap one year. What did I do? I brought my pool hall to the golf course. No, I didn’t set a pool table on the golf course. I brought what made me a successful tournament pool player to my golf game. I quit just playing and added practicing. By doing this I began reducing my handicap. I became a better golfer. Now the purpose of a handicap in golf is to be able to evenly flight golfers or allow me to more fairly compete with a better golfer. Only amateurs have have handicaps. Professional golfers don’t have handicaps. I’m asking you to consider going pro. Stay with me. I’m asking that you reduce or eliminate your handicaps. Let’s take a look at another type of handicap. In handicapped horse races, the faster horses have additional weight under their saddles to slow them down. The saddle weights are an attempt to create a dead heat between all horses in the race. The saddle weights keep horses from running at their top speeds. The saddle weights “handicap” the horses and slow them down. What saddle weights have you personally placed under your saddle? How are they impacting your success, health and happiness? How are you handicapping yourself. There are all sorts of goal setting plans out there. I have written one titled New Day, New Results but I want to simplify the process for you. Take a few minutes, copy and paste this to a Word document or print this out and establish your self imposed life handicaps. Once you have these values established, write WHY you would like to change these. Once you have determined WHY you would like to change, write action steps to eliminate these handicaps. If you do this or have written goals, congratulations! You are part of a small percentage that “Live Like They Own It!” WeightHow many pounds would you like to lose? ________ This is your Weight Handicap. Why would you like to lose the weight? What steps will you take? DebtWhat amount of debt would you like to eliminate? ____________ This is your Debt Handicap. Why would you like to reduce your debt handicap? What steps will you take? Below are other weights that may be under your saddle. These can also impact your health, success and happiness. AngerProfanityAlcoholDrugsSmoking Why would you like to eliminate any of these self imposed handicaps from your life? You will never change anything in your life until you firmly establish WHY you want to change. A friend recently shared a story of his friend that just quit smoking. He quit by using an app on his phone that tracked the past, current and future COST of smoking. He found his WHY. It was not the known health benefits, it was the cost. Find your WHY! Begin removing the handicaps and saddle weights that are keeping you from Success,  Health and Happiness. What self imposed handicaps do you plan on removing this year. Check Out our new goal setting guide at NewDayNewResults.com or click the picture below.Greg Gilbert conducts Keynotes And Local Management Development Sessions On-Site and at locations around the country.  He is committed to assisting the willing to “Lead Like You Own It” through increased Education, Engagement and Accountability.Visit GregGilbertCoaching.com for more information.
