What the Good Book Says

But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months and there was a severe famine over all the land yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. ~Luke 4:25-26

When I was growing up, my grandfather called his Bible “The Good Book.”  When you asked him a question, he would say, “Well, according to the Good Book…” and quote a verse of scripture that he probably had committed to memory.  When Jesus went to the synagogue in his hometown to preach his first sermon, Jesus did exactly that.  He picked up the Good Book (or the Good Scroll, as the case may be), and he told his hometown crew what it said.
And they didn’t like it.

Because Jesus sees in the Good Book Good’s deep desire to bring all people together.  Jesus came to tear down the walls that separate us, walls of race and religion and politics and ideas that we use to insulate ourselves from other people, to keep others outside our doors and our lives.  

On Sunday we will turn to the Good Book and discover that the tent of God’s grace is big enough for us all.
