One footnote: Striking this balance between terrorism on one extreme, and parody on the other, is not merely a matter of going back and forth between the extremes enough times (which seems to be the strategy of the filmmakers that come out of that comedy-to-horror pipeline [Peele, Cregger]), Rather, it’s about merging these two strains into a unity, which makes the comedy serve the story, and help the audience stay invested, and willing to suspend their disbelief.
